Biography

Partner, Lawyer and European Patent Attorney, UPC representative

Lionel Martin is a partner in the Patents team at August Debouzy. He joined August Debouzy in 2014 as a French and European patent attorney, having gained five years of experience at a renowned IP firm. Since his admission to the Paris Bar in 2016, he holds the dual qualifications as a lawyer and a European patent attorney. He is also registered as a UPC representative.

Drawing on his background in both science and law, he handles patent litigation and opposition proceedings in French and English, before the French courts, the French PTO (INPI), the UPC and the EPO. He also continues to assist his clients with patent drafting and prosecution.

Most of his work involves mixed patent litigation cases before both the EPO and the French courts or the UPC, which sometimes involve a high degree of interaction. His scientific training has led him to work on cases in the fields of telecommunications (FRAND licensing-induced litigation), energy, medical devices and automobiles. These cases almost always involve large corporations, leading him to work with foreign clients on a daily basis.

He also passes on his expertise to the next generation by providing academic training at leading engineering schools such as Ponts ParisTech and CentraleSupélec, as well as law schools including Paris-Saclay University (Master 2 LEAD) and Strasbourg University (CEIPI) and universities abroad, including the University of Michigan.
