However, other committees, such as the committee on the environment (ENVI), can issue an opinion in the framework of the legislative process. ENVI voted for introducing **stricter climate due diligence obligations for companies in the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence – CSDD – Directive**). This [opinion](https://www.europarl.europa.eu/meetdocs/2014_2019/plmrep/COMMITTEES/ENVI/PA/2023/02-09/1260237EN.pdf) was adopted by 39 votes to 34 (after the center-right EPP group withdrew its support for the compromise amendments). ENVI’s opinion is that companies should be held accountable for any failure to mitigate adverse environmental impacts or to adapt to them. It also suggests decreasing target levels in mandatory climate neutrality transition plans for companies, in five-year steps between 2030 and 2050. Parliament’s final position should be put to the vote this coming May.
